This Day in History: April 14, 1981

Columbia (the first space shuttle) completed a journey of over 1,000,000 miles.  The shuttle landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California.  Astronaut John W. Young and pilot Robert L. Crippen made up the whole crew of the space shuttle.

Construction of the shuttle began on March 27, 1975 following the completion of a prototype name Enterprise.  Columbia was launched on April 12, 1981 and was the first shuttle that successfully made it to space.  Columbia continued to complete missions until the tragic crash on February 1, 2003 while the shuttle was landing.
