Everyone Lives!
If you haven't noticed thus far, Mental Floss is my favorite magazine ;) It offers educational, interesting, and informative articles such as "7 Horrifying Aircraft Landings (in which no one died)". All the time we hear about the terrible crashes where a good majority, if not all, of the passengers have died. For a change of pace, this article focuses on awful landings, but all of them have happy endings. The ones I found most interesting were number 5, British Airways Flight 5390 and number 7, U.S. Airways Flight 1549. The British flight landing resulted from the wrong size bolt being screwed on the left cockpit's windscreen. At about 17,000 feet, the window detached and the captain got sucked out of the window! Fortunately, his feet were tangled in the controls and the flight attendants were able to keep a hold of the captain. The copilot landed the plane and, surprisingly, the captain survived! The U.S. Airways Flight landing, on a more humorous note, was due to a flock of geese hitting the plane and getting sucked into the engines. The pilot had to land the plane in the Hudson River in order to land safely. The passengers were then able to stand on the wings of the plane until they were rescued.
