Just in case any of you have wondered, those trails or streaks that planes leave behind them in the sky are called contrails. In this article by Peter Tyson, an explanation of how and why contrails form is included. Tyson also speaks about the effects contrails have on our atmosphere and climate change. What is interesting is that researchers utilized the air freeze that took place for a few days after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 to study the effects on the atmosphere in comparison to every other day of the year when aircraft is in the air.
