This article discussed some of the latest breakthroughs in aviation showcased at the 2013 Oshkosh Airshow in Wisconsin. The five highlighted innovations were 1) a plane that is run on natural gas, saving loads of money on fuel costs, 2) a fly-in movie theatre (because obviously the pilot would want another reason to stay in a cramped cockpit), 3) Terrafugia's Transition, a small airplane that also is street-legal, 4) a jet pack that is able to control a 150 mph free fall, and 5) an electric glider that can be owner assembled (essentially the life-size version of a model airplane).
I found all of these innovations interesting, but my favorite is the plane that doubles as a car. This seems so sci-fi to me. It has foldable wings and apparently can fit into a one-car garage. It is probably extremely expensive, but hopefully in the next decade we will start seeing these on the road.
