Sikorsky XHSS-2 Sea King (1959) |
On March 11, 1959, the Sikorsky XHSS-2 Sea King took flight
for the first time. The helicopter, now known
as Sikorsky SH-3A Sea King, was an addition to the U.S. Navy and was built with
the ability to land on water. This
massive helicopter had two engines and was over 72 feet long. The S-61 series of helicopters that exists
today began with the SH-3A. The helicopters
in this series serve as anti-submarine helicopters, in combat search and rescue
missions, and as security for the United States President.
