My fiancé Eric really likes planes. He is particular fond of
ultralight aircraft. I tried for some time to find an organization or
individual near Dayton that would be able to give him a ride in an ultralight
for his birthday. I struck out at this endeavor but did manage to find Caesar
Creek Soaring Club in Waynesville, Ohio. CCSC gives intro glider rides to the
public although I admit it is not cheap. I decided the experience was worth it
so I bought him a certificate for his birthday.
For people who, like me, aren’t quite sure what a glider is,
it doesn’t have an engine. Gliders fly by coasting on wind currents. There is a
lot of science involved in this. The glider is attached to a tow plane and
carried into the air. When it reaches a high enough altitude the tow plane
releases the glider, and bam, you’re flying. Needless to say, I was a bit
nervous for Eric’s safety.
Now perhaps it was because I was only girl among the 15
elderly men belonging to CCSC, but they decided to make a “routine maintenance
flight” and allowed me to have a glider ride even though I had only paid for
Eric’s. It was an amazing experience though. The pilot let me fly the plane for
a few minutes, and even though there wasn’t an engine, I felt completely at
ease once I was in the air. We descended in a spiral and our landing but pretty
rough, but I am so glad that I was able to share that experience with my fiancé.
I would definitely encourage other people to give it a shot.
