Wings Assignment #5

  1. What role did the helicopter play in the development of aviation technology?
The beginning of the helicopter started out as a challenge. Although the idea of vertical flight was not new amongst aeronautic engineers, they all had trouble developing a practical, straight up in the air flying machine. It was not until a Spanish engineer by the name of Juan de la Cierva came along to pave the way towards developing a successful helicopter. Cierva developed the autogiro, which was created by setting “a free-wheeling rotor at a positive angle on top of a machine fitted with a conventional engine and a propeller mounted on the nose” (p. 464). However, when the autogiro proved to be extremely dangerous to land due to control issues, modifications were made to it and the first practical helicopter emerged in World War II. With rotary wing flight taking off, a man by the name of Igor Ivan Sikorsky furthered the development of the helicopter and brought the United States closer to the helicopter we have today. Sikorsky used a single rotor to offset the twisting of the main rotor and found a way to manage up and down control for the pilot in the helicopter (p. 469). In 1941, Sikorsky successfully developed his VS-300 into a fully operational helicopter.  

  1. How did the U.S. view the launch of the Russian satellite Sputnik and what was the reaction?
The U.S. did not take very well to the launch of the Russian satellite, Sputnik. They viewed is as a defeat and went so far as to call it “a technological Pearl Harbor” (p. 485). It seems a bit dramatic, but after going through World War II, competition between countries were growing and the subject of aeronautics in space was a big competition. From that point, there began a “space race” between the Soviets and the United States. The United States cut NACA which had been the nation’s biggest aeronautical research organization up to that point. Instead, they replaced NACA with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA. The administration was created to show the new, futuristic direction that the former NACA was headed towards. Shortly after NASA’s launch, it “immediately catapulted into the international spotlight as one of the best-known and most visible federal agencies” (p. 485). Later on, the Cold War emerged as a “battle” between nations, focused on science and engineering research that resulted in development of new advance weapons systems. This left the nation in a state of constant paranoia of a nuclear attack. Because of this threat, science, math, and engineering were pushed to be pursued all over the United Sates.


  1. Support or refute the statement that aviation was the most important military technology since the invention of gunpowder.

I definitely support the statement that aviation was the most important military technology since the invention of gunpowder. First of all, it allowed for all around world war. Nations were able to transport troops across the seas conveniently and transport a variety of weapons. It is terrifying to think that an attack could happen anywhere at any time, and that thought would not be crossing our minds if aviation had not taken over. Second, military planes could carry out a ridiculous amount of destruction. For example, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki took out entire cities and reduced them to dust. Without aviation, that would not have been possible. I’m not saying the bombing was not tragic, because it was, but as far as the military goes, aviation was definitely a major factor in carrying out that attack. Third, there really is no limit as to what aviation in the military can do. War planes were used for attacks, carriers, spies, medical emergencies, etc. Also, as John Keegan states, “…a war can be won by air power alone” (p. 590). I say that a war can be not only won by, but started by, fought by, and ended by air power alone. Aviation can be wonderful, but just like gunpowder, it can also be extremely dangerous, and that is why it was one of the most important military technologies.

3.  The helicopter was important for the development of aviation technology because it allowed vertical flight and the ability to hover.  The helicopter was very popular early on because it was cheaper to produce than an airplane, and was seen as the "personal transport of tomorrow" (pg. 470).  Helicopters soon became invaluable during warfare.  Vertical take-off meant that helicopters had access to places that airplanes did not.  This meant that they were highly mobile and could be deployed quickly, without the need of a landing strip or miles of clear ground.  Their unique capabilities made them perfect for search-and-rescue missions as well as medical evacuations (pg. 472-473).  They could be used to drop soldiers "directly onto enemy positions" (pg. 473).  The combination of these meant that helicopters were the perfect aircraft for the guerrilla warfare that followed WWII.  During Vietnam helicopters became larger and more advanced, turning into formidable gunships that could "carry forty-four troops over a distance of 110 miles" and would essentially replace wheeled vehicles during that war (pg. 473).  In all the helicopter was extremely important because it opened up whole new avenues of flight that the airplane could not.

7.  The invention of the computer had an enormous impact on the future of aviation technology.  Before the invention of the computer, aviation engineers had to employ dozens of mathematicians to work on calculations in parallel, acting as sort of a human computer.  With the invention of the computer these calculations could be done in a fraction of the time and with greater accuracy.  Newly developed computer programs allowed the engineers to draft and test aircraft design without having to physically build anything.  The computer turned the airplane business into a "mass production industry in which special-purpose machines enabled semiskilled workers to send a steady stream of...planes out the factory doors in record time" (pg. 514).  Not only did the computer revolutionize how the airplane was designed and built, it also changed the way they flew.  Computer systems could create flight simulators to train pilots before they ever got off the ground (pg. 521).  They also allowed advanced aircraft and missile tracking and targeting systems to be developed; which made missiles deadlier but also could give pilots an advanced warning of missile launch (pg. 522).  And of course, the computer led to the advances that allowed space exploration to become a reality.  Now, computers are a necessary part of any aircraft both because the planes are so complex and advanced, and because the skies are so crowded (pg. 511).

10.  The invention of flight may be the most important military technology since the invention of gunpowder.  This is because no two inventions have had such a dramatic impact on the state of the world.  When gunpowder was introduced to Europe from China we see a dramatic change take place in almost every aspect of life.  Castles are fortified with walls that are meters thick in order to protect against cannon fire.  Hunting laws have to be introduced to prevent the eradication of game.  The use of guns changed war dramatically from a game of strategy to a game of numbers.  Gunpowder allowed for the creation of unskilled militia.  Gunpowder allowed people to kill in numbers that had never been seen previously.  Gunpowder conquered the New World.  The invention of aviation had a similar impact.  Once again cities had to evolve by building landing strips, control towers and bomb shelters.  New laws had to be created to protect the airspace above countries.  Aviation changed warfare once again from a game of numbers and chance to a game of strategy.  The airplane allowed mankind to rain down destruction like never before.  But the technology of flight also allowed us to discover more about our planet than we ever knew before.  It allowed us to find and travel to every hidden nook and cranny.  Aviation even let us begin to explore the final frontier and put men on the moon.  In terms of changing the planet, I would agree that aviation has had at least as big of an impact as the invention of gunpowder.

The Future of Aviation

I came across an article written on March 23, 2015 about the future of aviation. The article suggest that airships are the most 'green' answer to the future growth of aviation. Researchers from a University in the UK completed a three year investigation into stratospheric passenger airships as part of a project to provide a sustainable air transport method of the future. Airships appear to be safe, efficient, cheap, and environmentally friendly. The team is considering reintroducing airships as a means of mass transportation of people and goods.

The project is called the MAAT project, which stands for Multibody Advanced Airship for Transport. Eight nations are working on the project to design a cruiser that can travel across the globe on a set route. It is proposed that smaller ships could carry people and goods and dock onto the large cruiser while it is still moving. The MAAT would use solar power to power the ship and provide propulsion and control.

The article suggests that by 2020 there will be 400 million aircraft passengers. The use of aircraft to move goods is also expected to increase by more than 340 percent over the next 20 years. MAAT is projected to lower the costs of transportation and free-up runway space. The MAAT sounds like a great idea to me. It seems kind of crazy to think of airships as the future of aviation,but with the proposed ships being the best balance of speed and fuel consumption, it seems like a good idea to invest in.

Tragedy in France

I went to the Yahoo News page tonight expecting some lighthearted procrastination reading. Instead I saw the headline: "Jet crashes in the Alps with 150 aboard, No survivors expected"

My heart hurt. So many lives lost on that plane. There were 16 high school sophomores returning from a school trip to Barcelona and their two teachers. There were two famous European opera singers who had just finished up their final performances of a show. A mixture of German, Australian, Japanese and other nationals were all aboard. And they're gone.

A younger me would have a difficult time processing this information. He didn't know how to emotionally respond to tragic events. But now I just feel so much for the families of those on board - especially those of the high school kids.

This is just a terrible reminder that even though flying is now the safest mode of transportation, no one is invincible, and tragedy can strike at any moment. It certainly won't help the fear I always feel when taking off in a plane.

Hopefully this was merely a freak accident. At this time, no terrorism is believed to be involved, but investigators are looking into the events of the crash now, thanks to a small recorder box that survived the otherwise disastrous crash which left barely discernible debris on the mountainside.

Once again, I'll be thinking of the victims tonight, and praying that nothing like this happens ever again.

Answer three of the following questions:

  1. What was the status of general aviation following WWII in the U.S.?

Following World War II, the aviation industry in the United States fell apart. Multiple companies with factories all over the country had been constantly churning out products during the war to fulfill military contracts. All of the sudden, they had nothing to build. Without government orders, most business reported massive losses, were forced to close plants, and laid off countless workers. Some savvy businesses were able to stay in operation by producing different goods for the first few years after the war: spare parts, appliances, automobiles, and more. Eventually, some lucky companies like Boeing began to churn out profits again.

It was far from smooth sailing though. With the surplus of planes manufactured in the early 1940s, the demand for planes was at an all time low. Even up to 1964, “40 percent of the active general aviation aircraft” was built during the wartime era or shortly thereafter. Piper, Beech, and Cessna were the only major companies to survive this economic downturn. They were able to produce quality, popular products in a time where general aviation was going by the wayside. Ultimately, the whole general aviation industry continued to decrease in profits as airlines and commercial aviation took over the skies.

  1. What effect did the invention of the computer have on aviation technology?

The invention of the computer aided aviation in a wide variety of ways. First of all, it made the process of designing airplanes much easier. Gone where the days where blueprints and schematics had to be drawn out by hand meticulously. With the dawn of computers, engineers could design the flying machines electronically, which saved time and increased accuracy, producing the “first paperless airplane(s).” Secondly, computer technology increased the accuracy of weapons systems. When missiles and bombs were synched to electronic delivery systems, they were able to hit more precise targets. For instance, allied forces destroyed a strategic bridge in Vietnam using laser-guided bombs. This new method of bombing has saved countless lives and resources since the days of carpet-bombing in World War II.

Furthermore, the military was able to upgrade the internal systems of its machines rather than produce entirely new models every time technology is updated. Thus, the B-52 will be around for 90+ years by the end. Finally, computers have now made it so pilots are no longer necessary. With drones rising in popularity, the military only needs an operator at a computer screen to strike enemy territory, which eliminates the possibility of personnel casualties. In essence, computers and planes have gone hand in hand.

  1. Support or refute the statement that aviation was the most important military technology since the invention of gunpowder.

I do believe aviation was the most important military technology since gunpowder. If one looks back in history, one finds that the way in which wars were fought changed very little from the early 18th century to the early 20th century. Throughout that period, soldiers generally marched into battle banging drums, lined up and fired in unison at the opposing line of soldiers. Occasionally some bold leaders would shift the game a little bit, like the surreptitious minutemen of the American revolution, but overall, the game of war was fought with this same set of rules.

Then, World War I happened. Things were different. Trenches replaced simple lines of soldiers. Machine guns replaced muskets. Tanks replaced cavalry. Men were being killed in exponentially higher rates than any previous wars. But was this really that different? It was simply a leap forward in the way gunpowder could be utilized sparked by the industrial revolution. The game of war still had the same objective. The rules were merely more complex. But there was one exception: planes.

Planes truly changed the game. In forty years the world saw the difference between the open fields of Europe during the Great War to the jungles of Vietnam where traditional tactics were moot. Aviation was a new frontier for militaries. It was a new mode of attack, and with that came the sudden realization that no one is safe. Even today, I fear a bomb falling from the sky sometimes, but I would never fear a large-scale invasion living in Dayton – I would hear about it on the news before it was ever a threat to me. Flying machines instill great fear and have great destructive power. Nuclear weapons are largely effective only because they can be flown to targets. Now, in our modern world, nations must invest the majority of their military budgets in missiles, planes, choppers, satellites and drones. The ability to fly has forever changed our ability to fight.



A Restaurant Recommendation

A couple of weekends ago, I went to a bridal shower for one of my friends. Little did I know that the place it was held at would relate so well to this honors course! The shower took place in Oakwood at a place called Flyboy's Deli along Far Hills Ave. At first I didn't think anything of the name, I was just focused on finding the place and getting parking. However, I soon discovered the meaning of the name 'Flyboys' when I walked upstairs into the Aviation Hall where the shower took place. Throughout the entire room was trinkets that related to Dayton's aviation heritage. They had little model airplanes hanging from the ceiling, pictures of the Wright Brothers and various airplanes lining the walls, and information cards on certain shelves telling of aviation in Dayton. It was an amazing atmosphere! After doing some research, I discovered that one of the owners of the deli (Steve Crandall) was an Air Force Colonel who retired and opened this deli with Eunice Kim in 2013. They opened the deli with the idea of focusing on inventions and inventors that originated in Dayton. One way they do this is through their menu. Several of the menu items' names are based on inventors/inventions such as "The Wilbur" Ham and Cheese, "The Orville" House Salad, "The Step Ladder" Egg, and "The Dunbar" Chicken Salad. I have never been a passenger on a plane, and I have never been big on the idea of riding in one. It's not that I'm necessarily afraid of something going wrong, but more like the loss of control and idea of being so far up in the sky that makes me nervous. I always thought that if I go on vacation I would prefer to drive. After learning more about airplanes in this class, I have become more interested in the idea of flight and the experience of flying. I'm starting to think it would be fun to be on a plane. Because of my peaked interest, I decided to look on the internet about the safety of airplanes. I came across one article from last month that explains how unsafe private planes actually are.

We've all heard it said before that we are much safer in an airplane than we are in a car. We always hear the stories of large airliner planes crashing or going missing. We also hear the stories of private plane crashes that involve celebrities or children. What we don't hear on the news everyday is the many other plane crashes that are happening. The article by Stephanie Pappas looks into just how often there are private plane crashes. She explains that general aviation has become safer since the 1970s, but that it remains much more dangerous than commercial flight. The accident rate in general aviation hasn't changed much over the past several decades while the airline industry has improved their accident rate in the United States by 80 percent. Pappas suggests that private planes may even be more dangerous than cars in America.

The fatality rate for general aviation has remained about 1 death in every 100,000 flight hours. The accident rate in personal flights has actually increased by 20 percent in the past decade with the fatality rate increased by 25 percent. If we are looking at raw numbers, 30,000 people die in car accidents each year compared to 400 that die from general aviation accidents. When looking at these numbers you need to put them in context. Many more people are driving on a daily and yearly basis than those that are flying. If we convert traffic fatalities to hours driving then we see that the fatality rate for automobiles is 1.1 per every 2 million hours. If we do the same for general aviation, fatalities come to 21 per every 2 million hours. This would suggest that a private plane is 19 times more dangerous than a family car.

Why do so many private planes crash? According to NTSB statistics, it usually comes down to pilot error with loss of control being the largest category. A private plane crash is most likely to happen from the result of a stall/spin situation in which the pilot does not have the altitude to recover. Private planes also lack safety features such as co-pilots, backup navigation and information systems, and extra engines. Private pilots are required to complete training every two years, but maybe the requirements aren't enough to ensure safe flight. The NTSB is looking to take methods used in commercial airliners and applying them to general aviation in order to create a safer flying environment.
